Joe Huppenthal - Varsity Head Coach

Joe Huppenthal just finished his third season at the helm of the Lake Central Girls’ Basketball program in the 2018 – 2019 season.

 

Prior to being named head coach, Coach Huppenthal served as the Head Varsity Boy’s Coach at South Bend Clay High School for 19 seasons before being named the Girls’ Varsity Head Coach prior to the 2015 – 2016 season.  During his one season leading the girls’ program Coach Huppenthal amassed the most wins (13) since the 2010 season.  Before heading east to South Bend, Coach Huppenthal was the Head Girls’ Varsity Coach at East Chicago Central High School for six seasons (1990 – 1996)  where he won five sectionals (103 – 27)  and lead the Lady Cardinals to the No. 1 ranking in the country during the 1994 – 1995 season.  In his first season as head coach at Lake Central, Coach Huppenthal helped the Indians to a 19-7 record and a DAC Championship  In his second season, the Indians repeated as DAC Champions while also winning Lake Central's 17th Sectional Championship.

He is a 1982 graduate of Highland High School and then continued his education at Purdue where he was a student manager for men’s basketball coach Gene Keady.  Coach Huppenthal teaches Math at Lake Central High School and is the father of two sons - Jared, 23 and Timmy, 17.
